The Zumwalt Family Lineage
President Clinton’s Remarks at Funeral Services for Elmo R. Zumwalt, Jr., in Annapolis, Maryland
My late father dedicated his life to helping others. He was an innovator, a humanitarian, a visionary. His favorite quote was 18th century British philospher Edmond Burke’s admonition:
“All that is necessary for the triumph of evil is that good men do nothing.”
Such traits made my father an activist, as was his father before him, imbuing them with a desire to leave the America they bequeathed a little better than the one they inherited. For generations, this has translated into a deep rooted love for country. It has resulted in a family legacy of military service, that began with the birth of our Nation and continues on through to today’s global war on terrorism. It is a legacy that has inspired the Zumwalt family to put country first. I am very proud of this legacy and our tradition of military service. It is with great pride I now share it with you.
